J. K. Reed (Modern)

J.K. Reed was born in Blackpool in the UK in 1944, and moved to New Zealand at the age of 10 where he attended Otago Boy's High School. He exhibited artworks in National Bank Art Competitions and with Otago Art Society. His works were seen by Gordon Tovy and the Queen Elizabeth Art Council.

At his first exhibition in Dunedin, 3/4 of his works were sold, he went on to do three other exhibitions at Otago Museum and a join show with Frank Reed.

He went on to study Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury in 1968, where a focus on building and landscape themes during his first year encouraged him to work on some Cubist and Expressionist inspired works.

During 72-76, responding to a Pop Art influence, Reed undertook a tour of the USA with Marshlands Studio. He toured again, through Europe in 1996, sponsored by Fisher's Fine Arts. Since his return, he has had numerous exhibitions.

Recently, he has been working on large scale oils and acrylics.

His artworks have gone to Prime Minister Jenny Shipley, Prime Minister Helen Clark, opposition leader Don Brash and President Bill Clinton.
